Browsing in tabs

You can browse webpages by viewing them as separate tabs within the Safari window.

To open pages in tabs:

  • To open a link on a webpage, right-click the link and choose “Open Link in New Tab.”

You can also Control-click the link.

  • To open a bookmark in the bookmarks bar, right-click the bookmark and choose “Open in New Tab,” or “Open in Tabs” if the bookmark is a collection.

You can also Control-click the bookmark.

  • To open a previous page, press the Control key and click the Back or Forward buttons.

  • To open the bookmarks list or Top Sites page, press the Control key and click the open-book icon or the Top Sites icon.

To open tabs from the bookmarks list:

  • Click the open-book icon to view the bookmarks list.

  • In the sidebar, select the collection that contains the bookmarks you want to open. The collection’s bookmarks appear on the right.

If you can’t see the list of bookmarks because Cover Flow view is covering it, drag up on the handle below the Cover Flow scroll bar.

  • Select the bookmarks you want to open and press the Space bar.

To bookmark a set of tabs as a collection:

  • Open the webpages as tabs in a Safari window.

  • Choose Bookmarks > “Add Bookmark for These Tabs.” (If the Bookmarks menu isn’t visible, press the Alt key to show the menu bar.)

  • Type a name for the bookmark, choose a location from the pop-up menu, and then click Add.

If you put the collection in the bookmarks bar, you can have all the pages in it open in tabs when you click the collection. Click the open-book icon, select Bookmarks Bar in the sidebar, and then select Auto-Click next to the collection’s name in the list on the right.

To rearrange or move tabs:

  • To rearrange tabs, place the pointer over a tab and drag left or right in the tab bar.

  • To open a tab in a different Safari window, place the pointer over the tab and drag it to another Safari window or to the desktop.

  • Right-click a tab and choose “Move Tab to New Window.”

To change your preferences for opening pages in tabs, choose Action menu > Preferences and click Tabs. (The Action menu is near the upper-right corner of the Safari window, and looks like a gear.)
